Hypothermia

Hypothermia is suspected when the core body temperature falls below 95ºF/35ºC.

Altered mental status and/or not shivering is a major concern.

Look for questionable judgment.

Remove their cold and usually wet clothing.  We have dry shirts they can wear.

The patients can be re-warmed with warm blankets, heat pads, and portable heaters.

 

Get the runner moving to generate heat.

If sunny, the patient may be placed in direct sunlight to enhance warming.

May need to transfer to the ED if not responding to warming measures.
